2009 World Championships in Athletics

Hello,

Welcome to this first post 'Other themes' ! The section was empty, it made me a little sad...For better visibility, I advise you to look at my posts on a computer (for the size but also because the colors differ on a phone that has a dark theme like me. If the theme is light, only the size makes it difficult to read).

I also wanted to do something a little different from usual, with an animated graphic. And I very quickly thought of Usain Bolt...I don't know why specifically him. Perhaps because he achieved one of the most impressive sporting performances of all time.
Indeed, in 2009, during the final of the world athletics championships in Berlin, he beat his own world record set 1 year earlier (9.69) with a time of 9.59 !

So I tried to graphically reproduce this feat achieved that day.

This final is also marked in my opinion by the proportion of sprinters under (or at most) 10.00 seconds. Indeed, in this final, this concerns 7 sprinters out of 8. Its a fairly rare performance because unless I'm mistaken, this has only happened one other time in the history of the world championships, in 2015 (link) that such a proportion of sprinters in a final achieve this time.

Concerning the final in Berlin, we find on the podium 2 also very well-known sprinters, Tyson Gay in 9.71 and Asafa Powell in 9.84 which are two very good times. To find the complete results of this final, here is a link.

To see how good these 3 times are, here is an illustration from AFP.

Regarding the animated graph, the data are not precise because it mainly comes from me. That is to say that I did not find any open data on this race. So I had to approximate the positions of each sprinter through a video of the race. The only data I could find were for Usain Bolt's split times every 10m.

Thanks for reading ! I hope it was clear and you liked it.
